Cause
The issue occurs when the ESX/vCenter credentials are changed but are not updated on the Backup Proxy. You can log on to the Backup Proxy and check the following log file to verify the change in credentials.

Resolution
Ensure that the credentials required to log on to vCenter and Backup Proxy are same. If the vCenter credentials were updated, then update the same on Backup Proxy.
To update credentials on Backup Proxy:
Ensure there are no VM jobs running or queued on the Phoenix Console.
Go to Phoenix Backup Proxy Virtual Machine on vSphere Web Client or vSphere Client.
Right-click on the Backup Proxy VM and shut down the VM.
When the machine is completely powered off, in the right pane, go to the Configure tab.
Click Settings - vApp Options.
Select Username and credentials and select Set Value.
Once you have updated the credentials, restart the VM.
If your Backup Proxy is installed on a standalone ESX server:
Log on to the Backup Proxy via Putty session.
Enter the command - ProxyConf.
Select the cloud type you are using for Phoenix.
Choose option 3 to update the credentials for ESX on Backup Proxy.
Provide the appropriate ESX Host Name or IP address and root login credentials.
Choose option 7 to exit from ProxyConf settings.
The Backup Proxy status changes to connected on Phoenix Console and a new backup is initiated.
