Upgrade the inSync Client

Overview

This section provides detailed information about upgrading the inSync Client using the following options:


❗ Important

Only Druva Cloud Administrator and inSync Cloud administrator can upgrade inSync Client on the user devices.


The following table describes the upgrade option that you can select for the supported release versions:

Before you begin

Before you begin upgrading the inSync Client version on the users' devices, ensure the following:

  • The inSync Client is installed and active on the device.

  • The inSync Client window is not open on the device. The device will not be upgraded successfully if the inSync Client window is open on the device.

  • The devices to be upgraded are selected from the following inSync Management Console pages:

    • For a manual upgrade, select the devices that need an upgrade from the Manage Device page.

    • For bulk upgrade, select the devices that need an upgrade from the Settingwheel>Client Upgrade page.

    • For auto-upgrade, select the devices that need an upgrade from the Settingwheel>Client Upgrade.

  • The desktop notifications are enabled for the users. TheinSyncLaunchednotification appears on the user device after the inSync Client upgrade is complete.

  • The Show inSync icon is enabled in the system tray for the users. The inSync Client icon disappears from the system tray of the user's device during the inSync Client upgrade and reappears when the upgrade is complete.

Auto-upgrade

The primary feature of this method is to automatically upgrade all the devices scheduled for an upgrade to the latest version with no manual effort involved. The auto-upgrade setting is available on the Settings > Deployment page. When the Automatic Upgrade setting is enabled, the auto-upgrade cycle starts every day from 10:00 am UTC and upgrades all the devices in batches. You can stop the auto upgrades at any point by disabling the Automatic Upgrade setting. You can monitor the auto-upgrade status on the Client Upgrade page. All the upgrade activities are captured in the Admin Audit Trail. To know more, see Audit Trails page.


❗ Important

inSync Client on the user devices is upgraded to the latest Generally Available (GA) version of inSync Client; regardless of the GA version is a major, minor, or a patch release. Example - If Druva releases a GA patch over a major version, all the inSync Client are automatically upgraded to the GA patch.


❗ Important

Automatic upgrade feature will not adhere to the headless property on devices installed with inSync Client version earlier than 5.9.5 if the devices are running with headless inSync Client. To ensure inSync performs the automatic upgrade in adherence with the headless property, it is recommended to first manually upgrade the devices to inSync Client v5.9.5 or higher.


Prerequisites

  • Auto-upgrade is available for Enterprise, Elite,and Elite Plus customers.

  • Auto-upgrade can be performed only on devices running on Windows and Mac. Auto-upgrade of the inSync Client does not require a device restart.

  • To minimize performance issues, Druva may apply a global throttle limit on the inSync Cloud to control the number of devices that can be upgraded within a specified time period.

  • Auto-upgrade is supported only on devices running inSync Client 6.5.x or higher versions.

  • For inSync Client versions lower than 5.8, you have to manually upgrade inSync Client to version 6.5.0, then auto-upgrade or manually upgrade to the latest version of inSync Client.

  • Auto-upgrade is not supported on devices running on OS X El Capitan if the inSync Client version is version 5.5 or earlier.

  • Auto-upgrade is not supported for devices running on Mac OS X 10.9.

  • Auto-upgrade is not supported for devices running on Linux OS.

  • Auto-upgrade is not supported for mobile devices. Upgrade notifications are sent to users from their respective app stores. Users need to upgrade their inSync Client using the app store.

  • The Client Upgrade page is accessible only to Cloud Administrators. This page displays if auto-upgrade is enabled and also an option to download the auto-upgrade activity report.

  • For Windows Client below version v6.5.x, you have to upgrade to the versions between v6.5.x to 7.1 to further upgrade to v7.2.4 and above.

❗ Important

  • If auto-upgrade is enabled, the upgrade process for all compatible inSync Clients will start 21 days after the latest inSync Client version is released.

  • If auto-upgrade is enabled, all previous manual or bulk upgrade processes will be canceled as soon as the auto-upgrade process is triggered (i.e., at 10:00 a.m. UTC).

  • If the Automatic Upgrade flag is disabled, all ongoing auto-upgrade processes will be canceled immediately.

  • If the inSync client fails to upgrade, then it will auto-roll back to the previous Client version without affecting or losing the user’s login information. The rollback also ensures that no user data is lost and backup operations are not disrupted.

  • The status for initiated client upgrade is reflected in the upgrade activity report. For more information see Upgrade Activity Report.


Procedure

  1. From the Endpoints Console, select the Client upgrade from the left navigation pane.

  2. Navigate to the Upgrade Settings section and select Edit.

  3. Change the option to Enable from drop down for Automatic Upgrade.

Enter 0 to set the daily upgrade limit to unlimited. After the auto-upgrade is enabled, the upgrade cycle starts at 10:00 am UTC every day.

Next steps

To monitor the auto-upgrade status and download the report:

  1. From the Endpoints Console, select the Client upgrade from the left navigation pane.

  2. Navigate to the Upgrade Jobs section to view the ongoing client upgrade activities.

  3. Click Download Report to download and view the auto-upgrade activity details in .csv format.

Cancel auto-upgrade

To cancel an auto-upgrade in progress:

  1. From the Endpoints Console, select the Client upgrade from the left navigation pane.

  2. Navigate to the Upgrade Settings section and select Edit.

  3. Change the option to Disable from drop-down for Automatic Upgrade

When the Automatic Upgrade flag is disabled, all ongoing auto-upgrade processes will be canceled immediately.

Bulk Upgrade

This method enables you to bulk upgrade devices to any of these inSync Client versions; the latest version, previous version, hotfix, or Early Access release. Using bulk upgrades, thousands of devices can be upgraded to the selected inSync Client version in the same upgrade cycle.

Prerequisites

  • The Client Upgrade page is accessible only to Cloud Administrators.

  • A bulk upgrade can be performed only on devices running on Windows and Mac.

  • Auto-upgrade must be Disabled, and an auto-upgrade cycle must not be in progress. To check if auto-upgrade is enabled, navigate to Settingwheel > inSync Settings > Deployment. Ensure to disable the auto-upgrade setting before performing a bulk upgrade.

Procedure

  1. From the Endpoints Console, select the Client upgrade from the left navigation pane.

  2. Select the Upgrade Client button. The Upgrade Client window appears.

  3. Under the Upgradable Clients section, set the below filters as per the requirement and click Apply. Once the filters are applied
    a. Client version:
    b. Profiles

    c. Storage
    d. Device OS
    Once the filters are applied, you are navigated to the Select Upgrade to Client version section.

  4. Under the Select Upgrade to Client version section, select the desired Client version from the drop-down and client Upgrade.

Cancel bulk upgrade

To cancel the bulk upgrade:

  1. From the Endpoints Console, select the Client upgrade from the left navigation pane.

  2. Navigate to the Upgrade Job section.

  3. Select the checkbox against the required activity or multiple activities and click Cancel to cancel the upgrade in progress. If an upgrade is canceled midway, the number of Scheduled devices is added to the total number of upgradable devices, and these devices will be processed in the next upgrade cycle.

Manual Upgrade

You can perform a manual upgrade on devices running on Windows, Mac, and Linux OS.

Prerequisites

  • A manual upgrade can be performed only on the devices running on Windows, Mac, and Linux OS.

  • Save the installer to a location from where the inSync Client users can download and run the installer.

Download the latest inSync Client here.

Upgrade inSync Client by logging onto user device

If you have access to the user device, you can directly log on to the user device and upgrade the inSync Client.

The manual upgrade procedure varies as per the operating system. The table below provides the upgrade instructions needed to manually upgrade the inSync Client on Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Install the latest inSync Client version. For supported versions refer to the Upgrade Matrix.

Mac

Install the inSync Client version. For supported versions refer to the Upgrade Matrix.

Linux

  1. Uninstall the previous version of the inSync Client from your laptop.

Do not remove configuration details and the inSync Share folder.


  1. Install the inSync Client version. For supported versions, refer to the Upgrade Matrix.

​To upgrade CentOS device to inSync Client v5.9.3, you need to run the following command to complete the installation:sudo yum install libappindicator-gtk3rpm -ivh <package name>


where <package name> represents the file name (along with the extension) of the installer.

Upgrade inSync Client through Endpoints Console

An administrator can also upgrade the inSync Client on the user device by selecting it from the Endpoints Console and scheduling the upgrade. After scheduling the upgrade, the next time the inSync Client connects to inSync Cloud, the inSync Client is upgraded first, and then the requested action is run.

Procedure

  1. From the Endpoints Dashboard, go to Dvices tab from lef navigation pane. The Manage Devices page displays a list of all devices.

  2. Select the desired devices and Click the Uprad option from the vertical 3-dot menu.

  3. Select the devices for an upgrade and click Upgrade. The devices that are available for an upgrade are indicated with the below icon in the inSync Client Version column.

  4. On the Upgrade Upgrade Client window, select the inSync Client version available for your operating system and click Upgrade.

​Hotfix and Early Access versions are displayed in the list only if they are enabled for your organization.


Druva Cloud flags the inSync Client for an upgrade. The upgrade is triggered during the next backup cycle of the inSync Client.


πŸ“ Note

  • Once the inSync Client is upgraded to the latest version, a βœ… mark is displayed next to the client version in the inSync Client Version column.

  • After the upgrade is complete, you can check the Client version to confirm the upgrade from the inSync Management > Devices menu. Select the device to check the upgrade status in the inSync Client Version column.


Additional information

Device Status

The following device statuses are displayed at various stages during the bulk and auto-upgrade process. You can view these statuses on the Client Upgrade page under Upgrade Activity.

Device Status

Description

Scheduled

When the device is scheduled for an upgrade.

In-Progress

When the download of the required release version is initiated.

Success

When the inSync Client is successfully upgraded to the downloaded release version.

Failed

When the selected release version has been downloaded, but the inSync Client fails to upgrade.

Canceled

When the upgrade is canceled by the user.

Device icons

The following icons help to identify if the inSync Client version installed on the device needs an upgrade or not. On the Endpoints Console, navigate to Devices. These icons are displayed in the inSync Client Version column on the Manage Devices:

This symbol appears for devices on which an upgrade cannot be performed if the client is running on a lower version.

​Upon upgrade to inSync Client version 6.5.0 on macOS, some of the Mac devices display the default application logo on the Dock instead of the actual Druva logo shown below. To resolve this, refer to the instructions given in this article
