Introduction
This guide covers common queries regarding how Druva inSync identifies, names, and updates client devices.
1. Can I manually change a device name?
No. Druva inSync automatically captures the device name during the initial activation process. This name cannot be manually edited within the inSync console or client.
Example: If your computer’s hostname is DESKTOP-SJL1KU0, the device name in inSync will be exactly DESKTOP-SJL1KU0
2. Why is there a "1" or "2" added to my device name?
This happens when a user attempts to reactivate the inSync client on a machine where a device is already registered. During activation, the user is given two choices:
Replace an existing device: Replaces the old record with the new one.
Add as a new device: Creates a separate backup record.
If "Add as a New Device" is selected for the same hostname, Druva increments the name to distinguish between the records.
Naming Logic Example:
First Activation: DESKTOP-SJL1KU0 (Initial record)
Second Activation: DESKTOP-SJL1KU01
Third Activation: DESKTOP-SJL1KU02
[!IMPORTANT] This indicates that there are now multiple distinct device records for the same physical machine assigned to that user.
3. What happens if I change the computer's hostname?
If you change the hostname of a system after the inSync client has already been activated:
Automatic Update: You do not need to perform any manual steps.
Trigger: The hostname will be automatically updated in the Druva console following the next successful backup cycle.
