How to verify whether the ESX/vSphere host is licensed for vStorage APIs

Overview

Phoenix backup proxy agent for VMware virtual infrastructure integrates with ESX and vSPhere vStorage API (VADP) to perform backup and restore. If the ESX/vSphere host is not licensed for the vStorage APIs, the backup and restore operations fail.

Error

Error Code: VMWARE_VMOMI65535 
Error Message: VMware VMOMI: Internal Error [Current license or ESXi version prohibits execution of the requested operation.] 

Verify whether the ESX/vSphere host is licensed

Check the following to verify whether the ESX/vSphere host is licensed:

Check the following to verify whether the ESX/vSphere host is licensed:

ESXi 6.x/7.x

On ESX(i)/vSphere 6.x or 7.x, navigate to below steps and verify whether vStorage APIs are listed.

  • Step 1: Log in to the vSphere Client or ESXi Web Client using your browser.

  • Step 2: Navigate to the Host and Clusters view.

  • Step 3: Select the ESXi host from the left inventory pane.

  • Step 4: Click the Configure tab.

  • Step 5: Under System, choose Licensing.

  • Step 6: You will see the assigned license and licensed features and verify whether Storage APIs are listed.

ESXi 8.x

On ESX(i)/vSphere 8.x, navigate to below steps and verify whether vStorage APIs are listed.

  • Step 1: Log in to the vSphere Client (HTML5 client).

  • Step 2: From the Home page, navigate to Hosts and Clusters.

  • Step 3: Select the ESXi host you want to check.

  • Step 4: Go to the Configure tab, and in the System section, click on Licensing.

  • Step 5: The License and Features section will display the licensed features for the host and verify whether vStorage APIs are listed.

If the ESX(i)/vSphere host is not licensed for the above options, contact VMware to obtain the vStorage APIs (or VADP) license.
