OneDrive Backup Structure Displays All Files Under "/Documents" Folder

Updated this week

Overview

Administrators may observe that Druva inSync only displays the /Documents folder under the OneDrive backup path for each user. This has led to concern that only this specific folder is being backed up, while other custom or user-created folders in OneDrive are not included in the backup scope.

Cause:

By default, Druva presents all OneDrive backed-up content under a /Documents folder structure within its interface. This is a logical representation used in the Druva console and does not correspond to the actual physical folder path in the user’s OneDrive environment.

Traceback:

Admins viewing the Restore Data section under OneDrive may see the following structure for all users:

/Documents/

  • Files that exist in various paths in the user's actual OneDrive (including root or custom folders) appear consolidated under /Documents in Druva's UI.

Resolution:

This behavior is by design and does not indicate an issue with the backup process. Druva backs up all data from a user’s OneDrive account regardless of the original path or folder name. All files and folders are captured, including those outside the default /Documents folder in OneDrive.

Administrators can verify this by using the Restore Data feature:

  1. Navigate to the Restore tab for a user’s OneDrive.

  2. Search for file names or extensions (e.g., .docx, .xlsx) known to be located outside the /Documents folder.

  3. The files will be listed in search results and accessible for restore, confirming they were backed up.

Example:

In one test case, files stored at the root and other custom folders in a user’s OneDrive were located in the Restore Data section under /Documents, confirming they had been backed up even though they were outside of the typical OneDrive "Documents" path.

As you can see there is a Documents Folder, on the M365 it shows under My Files. In Druva, it shows under Documents/Documents

Include and Exclude Filters:

No custom filters or exclusions are needed to back up additional OneDrive folders—Druva automatically includes all content from the user's OneDrive environment.

Verification:

To verify:

  • Perform a restore data search for any known file that resides outside /Documents in OneDrive.

  • Confirm it is available under the /Documents path within Druva's interface.
