Manage a legal hold policy

Add users to a Legal Hold policy

  1. Click the Legal Hold name to view details of the Legal Hold policy. For more information, see Access Legal Hold.

  2. Under Custodians, click on the dots icon and select the method using which you want to add users. The following methods are available:

    • Using Name or Emai: In the Add Custodians window, start typing the name of the user that you want to add to this Legal Hold and select from the drop-down list. You can add multiple users. Click Add to add the selected users to the Legal Hold and click Save to save your changes.

    • Upload CS: Click Browse and select the CSV file that contains the email IDs of the users whom you want to include in the Legal Hold policy. Click Add to add the selected users to the Legal Hold. You can add a maximum of 500 users at a time using CSV. If you want to add more than 500 users, create multiple CSV files. For example, if you want to add 1463 users, create the following 3 CSV files:

      • CSV File 1 with names of first 500 users.

      • CSV File 2 with names of 501 to 1000 users.

      • CSV File 3 with names of the remaining 463 users.

Find users associated with a Legal Hold policy

  1. Click the Legal Hold name to view details of the Legal Hold policy. For more information, see Access Legal Hold.

  2. Under the Custodians section, in the Search by Custodian name or Email search box, type the custodian name or the custodian email ID.
    inSync lists the custodians that match the search criteria.

Remove users from a Legal Hold policy

  1. Click the Legal Hold name to view details of the Legal Hold policy. For more information, see Access Legal Hold.

  2. Select the users, and then click Remove.

  3. Click Remove to confirm your action.

After inSync removes users from the Legal Hold, the legal administrator cannot access the users' backup data.

Update the data access preference for a Legal Hold

  1. Click the Legal Hold name to view details of the Legal Hold policy. For more information, see Access Legal Hold.

  2. Click the Data Access tab.

  3. In the Data Access section, click Edit. The Edit WebDAV Settings window appears.

  4. Define the kind of WebDAV access that you want to allow. The following options are available in the WebDAV Access field:

    • All Collected Data: Select this option if you want to access the data of all the snapshots for all user devices.

    • Last Collected Data: Select this option if you want to access the data of the latest snapshots for all user devices.

      The data is displayed with the snapshot version information by default. To disable viewing the version information when you access the data, contact support. You can avail this option provided you have an Elite license.

    • Data within a Date Range:Select this option if you want to access the backup data from a specific date range. In the Date Range fields, select the start date and the end date for accessing the Legal Hold data.

      By default, administrators have access to all backup data. If you want administrators to access only deleted files, select the Include Deleted Files Only check box.

  5. Click Save.

The data access preferences get saved to your existing Legal Hold policy.

The legal administrator must reconnect from the WebDAV client to view these updates.


Update the Legal Hold policy name and policy type

  1. Click the Legal Hold name to view details of the Legal Hold policy. For more information, see Access Legal Hold.

  2. In the Details tab, on the Summary section, click Edit.
    The Edit Summary window appears.

  3. In the Name box, type a new name for the Legal Hold policy.

  4. (OPTIONAL) Select a new type for the policy from the Type field. A policy type helps you to group Legal Holds into easily identifiable categories. You can also define a custom type for a Legal Hold. If you want to create a new type, see Create a Legal Hold Policy Type.

  5. Click Save.

Delete a Legal Hold policy


โ— Important

When you delete a Legal Hold policy, all users associated with that policy are removed from Legal Hold.


  1. Click the global navigation icon to access the Global Navigation Panel and select eDiscovery. The eDiscovery page is displayed.

  2. Select the Legal Hold policies that you want to delete.

  3. Click Delete.

  4. Click Yes to confirm your action.
