Problem description

CloudRanger fails to back up the RDS database, returning the following error: "Cannot create a snapshot because the database instance xxxyyyzzz is not currently in the available state. Retrying in 600 seconds."

Cause

  • This issue occurs when the RDS database instance is not in a running state at the time CloudRanger attempts to initiate a snapshot.

  • It is commonly seen with scheduled RDS instances that are only active during specific time windows.

Verification

To verify the issue:

1) Log in to your AWS account.

2) Attempt to manually create a snapshot of the affected RDS instance.

If the instance is not available, AWS will return an error similar to: "Database is in an invalid state."

Resolution

To resolve the issue:

  • Ensure that the RDS database instance is in a running state before the scheduled backup begins in CloudRanger.

  • Adjust the instance’s schedule if necessary to align with the backup window.
