Purpose

Prepare the environment for successful restores of the virtual machines on your Microsoft Hyper-V hosts without errors.

1.What is Microsoft Hyper-V solution?

  • Hyper-V is Microsoft's hardware virtualization product. It lets you create and run a software version of a computer, called a virtual machine.

  • Each virtual machine acts like a complete computer, running an operating system and programs.

  • Hyper-V feature is a Type 1 hypervisor-based architecture. The hypervisor virtualizes processors and memory. It provides mechanisms for the virtualization stack in the root partition to manage child partitions, virtual machines (VMs) and expose services such as I/O (input/output) devices to the VMs.

2. What are RPs ( Recovery Points) in NAS?

  • An RP (Recovery Points) is the cumulative data that is stored on the Druva cloud according to the dates on which it has been backed up.

  • RP’s are created only for backups with below status-

    • Successful and Successful with Errors

    • and NOT for failed, skipped, queued, or canceled

  • When you select any RP for restore, it is capable of doing a full restore.

  • The availability of the RP depends on the retention set in the backup policy

3.What are the Types of RP (Recovery Points)?

The RPs are differentiated based on where they have been stored.

There are three types of RPs:

4.Where can RPs (Recovery Points) be viewed for Hyper-V VMs?

  • Go to the Management Console - select your organization - Protect - Hyper-V -- ConfiguredVMs - Check the square box besides the VM name - Click on Restore button or Click on VM Restore

5.What is the Restore Workflow for Hyper-V virtual machines?

  • Druva supports the following restore workflows:

    • Restore virtual machine to original location

    • Restore virtual machine to alternate location

  • The step-by-step detailed instructions on restore workflow

6.What are the prerequisites for a successful restore?

  • Connection

    • Verify the connection between the server and Druva.

  • Service

    • The service “Hybrid Workloads Agent ” should be in Running mode. (start-run-services.msc )

  • UI Status

    • The status of the Hyper-V Host on Druva console should show “Connected”.

      • (Note: If connection status is disconnected, backup will fail immediately)

  • Operating System checks

    • Check the available disk space on the target server.

    • If the source data which has been backed up Windows deduplication enabled volume, do make sure that the restore target server should also have Windows deduplication enabled on the restore Volume. Or else the restore data would be bigger in size compared to the source data

  • Anti-Virus

    • Druva executables should be added to the exclusions of Anti-virus.

    • (If not done, the anti-virus keeps the.exe on HOLD and the backup will stay in Queued state.)

  • VSS Writers

    • VSS writers should be stable. Verify the same in command prompt (Admin mode)

    • vssadmin list writers
