The size of the Snapshot on the Storage after a Linux File Server Backup is multiple times (more than 10x) bigger than the original Linux File Server
Updated over a week ago

Problem description

The size of the Snapshot on the Storage after a Linux File Server Backup is much bigger than the original Linux File Server.

Cause

  • The reason for this size is that all of the default folders and files exclusions were removed from the Content Rule.

  • Some directories including /proc on a linux system are running in memory and essentially create an infinite loop.

Resolution

To resolve this issue you need to add the default folders and files exclusions back to the content rule then run a new backup:
.snapshot, /dev, /etc/Phoenix,/proc,/selinux,/sys,/tmp,/var/Phoenix

After this is done, remove the previous Snapshots that correspond to Restore Points that have the wrong size.

Steps to Delete the Virtual Machine Snapshots:

To delete a snapshot for a virtual machine:

  • Log in to the Management Console.

  • Under Product & Services > Phoenix, click VMware.

  • Select your organization if organizations are enabled .

  • The vCenter/ESXi host page appears that lists all the registered vCenter/hypervisors.

  • You can either select the registered vCenter from the list or select it from the vCenter/ESXi host list in the left navigation pane.

  • In the navigation pane, click Configured VMs.

  • Click on the virtual machine.

  • Click on the Backups tab.

  • Select the snapshot you want to delete.

Click the ‘Delete’ button on the top-right corner of the console
