Quick Configuration Guide to Protect Salesforce Data

Overview

This guide helps you quickly onboard your Salesforce environment to the Dell PowerProtect services platform for comprehensive data protection. The onboarding flow is divided into four streamlined steps:

  1. Console Setup: Activate your account and enable the Cloud Key Management System (KMS).

  2. Dell PowerProtect Backup Service App Installation: Install the App from the Salesforce AppExchange.

  3. Backup Configuration: Define your backup projects and scope.

  4. Data Restoration: Perform a test restore to verify data integrity and accessibility.

Before You Begin

Ensure you meet the Salesforce System Requirements and have the necessary Cloud Platform administrative permissions. For more information, see Salesforce and inSync Prerequisites.

Step 1: Set Up the Console

This section covers the administrative actions required within the Cloud Platform (CP) console to prepare for integration.

A. Account Activation

  • Administrator will receive a welcome email containing an Activate Now link.

  • Click the link to be redirected to the password reset screen. Set your password and log in to the Dell PowerProtect Console.

B. Enable Cloud KMS

  • Upon login, navigate to the Salesforce workload from the main dashboard.

  • Enable the Cloud Key Management System (KMS). This allows Dell PowerProtect to manage the unique encryption keys used to secure your backed-up Salesforce data.

  • Confirm the action when prompted.

C. Invite the Salesforce App Administrator to

  • After enabling KMS, you will reach the User Invite screen.

  • Enter the Email ID and Username of the Salesforce user who will manage the backups. This links your Salesforce Org to the Dell platform.

Step 2: Install and Access the Dell PowerProtect Backup Services App

The invited Salesforce user must install the App to establish a secure connection between Salesforce and Dell PowerProtect.

A. Install the App

  • The invited user will receive an email with a direct link to the Dell Salesforce AppExchange listing.

  • Click Get It Now and follow the prompts to install the app.

    ​Important: During installation, select Install for Admins Only (or specific profiles) to ensure restricted access to backup management.
    ​


B. Accessing the Application

  • Single Sign-On (SSO): If your Salesforce credentials match the invited user details, you will be logged in automatically upon opening the app.

  • Manual Login: If SSO is not configured or fails, log in using your standard Salesforce credentials when prompted.

Step 3: Back Up Salesforce Data

Dell PowerProtect Backup Services organizes backups through "Projects." By default, the organization is available in the Dell Salesforce environment. You can add and switch the organization by defining a new project.


You must define what data to back up and when.

  1. Create a Backup Definition: In the Dell PowerProtect App, create a new definition to specify which objects (Standard and Custom) and files to protect.

  2. Set the Schedule: Define the backup frequency (e.g., daily or every few hours) in the Scheduling tab. For more information, see Configuring Backups.

  3. Metadata (Optional): Enable metadata backup if you wish to protect object schemas and configurations.

  4. Verify Permissions: Ensure the Salesforce integration user has the "Modified All Data" and "API Enabled" permissions (or the specific Dell Permission Set assigned).

  5. Run Manual Backup: The job will run at the scheduled time, or Click Backup Now to trigger an initial full backup immediately.

Step 4: Restore Data

Restoration is managed via Restore Templates, which allow for repeatable and precise data recovery.

  1. Create a Restore Template: Navigate to Restore & Seeding and define the source and destination (e.g., restoring from Production to a Sandbox).

  2. Select Data: Choose specific records or use a SQL-like Query for granular, bulk selection.

  3. Advanced Settings (Optional): * Data Masking: Obfuscate sensitive data when restoring to Sandboxes.

    • External IDs: Use External IDs to prevent record duplication.

    • Validation Rules: Choose to bypass or trigger Salesforce validation rules during the restore.

  4. Execute Restore: Click Start Data Restore. Monitor the progress in real-time via the Tasks page.
